A monument within the medieval city
City Walls belongs to the exceptional urban landscape of Ani. Its position, masonry, openings and surviving decorative details reveal how patrons and builders responded to religion, topography and the city’s changing political life. Approach it first from a distance: the silhouette and relationship with nearby roads and valleys explain choices that are harder to see at the wall itself.
How to read the architecture
Look for changes in colour and tooling across the volcanic stone, the rhythm of blind arcades and the way structural elements guide light. Missing roofs and damaged elevations are part of the monument’s later history, not a picture of its original appearance. Historic earthquakes, abandonment, weather and earlier interventions all contributed to the present condition.
