Ani’s monuments have changed through construction, repair, earthquake, abandonment and modern conservation. Material evidence

Local volcanic stone, lime mortar, rubble cores, carved blocks and painted plaster respond differently to water, frost, wind and structural movement. Construction joints reveal additions and repairs. Documentation and technology

Early glass negatives and hand measurements established a baseline for many monuments. Continuity and change

Ani passed through Bagratid, Byzantine, Seljuk, Shaddadid and Georgian rule. Buildings could outlive the authority that commissioned them, acquire additions or serve new communities. Archive and conservation evidence therefore preserves both original construction and later life. These layers are central to the significance of the site.

Present condition

The severe continental climate of Kars exposes masonry to snow, rain, strong wind and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Historic earthquakes removed domes, vaults and wall sections. Loss of roofs allows water to enter wall cores, while open edges become vulnerable to further movement. Conservation combines structural analysis, material study, drainage and long-term observation.
